40-Yard Dash Training Tips: Managed Explosion

Courtesy of Brian Norgard via StudentSportsFootball.com

First and foremost, the 40-yard dash is not a race; it is a test. The only person who can defeat you is yourself.

The 40-yard dash broken down in the most simplified manner is a set of choreographed leaps. Think of the test as a structured dance. And like any dance, your 40-yard dash technique can be perfected with diligence and attention to detail.

Don’t be fooled, the 40-yard dash can be studied for. Of course, some athletes are always going to be more talented than others. If you don’t have the prototypical height, weight and speed, that’s fine.

Take Brian Urlacher of the Chicago Bears for example. The four-time Pro Bowler was a 5-foot-10, 160 pound wide receiver coming out of high school. That's right, he was a wide receiver! Years of training made him what he is today. Great athletes are made not born.

We at Function have broken down the first 10 yards of the “test” in an easy-to-understand format.

I. Stance

The stance position

In this article, we won’t get into the technical details of the stance; however, we will discuss some of the basics.

Above all else, a good stance is one of the most important pieces of the 40-yard dash puzzle. A proper stance sets the stage for the crucial first 10-yards of test. Most sprinters and professional athletes use a sprinter stance. Function recommends all athletes utilize either a four-point track stance (more stability) or a three-point stance. If you are a football player and are more comfortable in a three-point stance, this is OK.

Inexperienced athletes have a tendency to be too relaxed in the starting position. It is essential that you be coiled up like a spring, ready to explode out of your stance. Too relaxed of a position does not give you the proper power and position to run a sound technical race.

On the flip side, being too tense can be counterproductive. Tense muscles don’t react well to drastic speed changes. There is a fine balance that can be reached after you become more familiar with the starting position. It’s naturally awkward at first; therefore, your must familiarize your body by completing hundreds of repetitions.

II. Burst

The burst

Push off with both feet at the same time as hard as you can. Most football players who utilize the three-point stance make the common error of stepping forward with the lead leg and applying no back leg thrust. This defeats the principle of the stance and creates wasted movement. Some people compare the first step out of the block to “leaping” or “stumbling” out of the start.

These analogies are used because good sprinters make coming out of the blocks look like a series of jumps. If you have a chance to watch a world-class sprinter, notice this phenomenon. It will help you formulate an image of good form.

III. Acceleration I

The acceleration stage

The first 10 yards is about one thing: managed explosion.

You must learn to accelerate by generating power in the first 4-5 steps. The body should remain fairly compact and the steps should be as straight as possible. The arms should be pumping vigorously, almost to the point of exaggeration.

Your body should not be fully erect. Do not stand up straight. This is the most common mistake athletes of skill levels make when running the 40-yard dash. This kills your acceleration and does not allow you to “power” through the final 30 yards of the test.

If you can, have a friend or coach watch your body position in the first 10 yards. Often, it is hard to judge whether or not you are standing up too quickly.

Some athletes like to concentrate on keeping the head looking downward. Similar to watching a pitch through in baseball, keeping your head down forces the body to remain compact. Gravity slowly will bring you upward as you continue down the track or grass.

In the next article, we will discuss the final two phases of 40-yard dash. Remember, you can be coached for the 40. It just takes time, dedication and a good training program.

  59. jay lewis Says:

i hope this works for me at the national underclassmen camp

  60. kevin Says:

Speed it self is 50 percent form and 50 percent skill. i knew this athlete who once ran a 4.87 and he worked with a professional track sprinter for about a month. Together they worked on form and and dropped his 40 yard to a 4.42. Which is the reason why many think the 40 yard proves little in athletes ability

And for those who want speed with out the sacrifice of other attributes, it could be simply said hit the weights, jump rope, and get flexible.flexibilty helps with stride length, weights with power, and jump rope with foot speed. And finally to accelerte the the process work on explosion and recovery with plymetrics. Be as light as possible on your feet while exerting the maximal force, it will rewire your motors and your neurons to be quicker. which will lead to blazin 40 yrd dashes.

  118. Coach David Kamalani Says:

Remember that these 40 yard suggestions is only for testing purposes. You won’t use it in a game type situation. The technique to running the 40 cannot be achieved in one session either. However, the importance is to be in a workout that involves explosive, speed, and power type programs. This will not only help your 40 times but prepare you for game time. If you are ever in Hawaii or have any questions, I will be glad to help you experience SPARQ training. 808-344-9763 or davidkamalani@yahoo.com
